He also hopes to enjoy the long haul flight to the US West Coast by sitting beside the Filipino champ’s celebrity mom on the plane.
Despite public calls for austerity in the wake of storm tragedies, Nograles, an unabashed Pacquiao fan, will lead a cheering squad of congressmen leaving on Friday to be at the fight site in Las Vegas on Nov. 14 (Sunday in Manila).

“It’s a long flight, I’ll enjoy it more by sitting beside her because I will not even feel the air turbulence,” Nograles said, referring to Aling Dionisia.

Nograles saw nothing wrong with flying to the United States with a bevy of lawmakers even if it was only a little over a month ago that Metro Manila and Luzon were swamped by floods.

“Just like you, congressmen have freedom of movement, you cannot stop anybody from going around, as long as they are not using government funds. We can be absent in Congress for a day or two,” Nograles, who just arrived Monday from an official US trip, told a press conference.

Nothing can stop them

Nograles said he would miss next week’s Monday session but he would be around for the Tuesday meeting. He promised approval of bills that need final reading by tomorrow (Wednesday).

Although a round-trip ticket to the United States is a luxury to most Filipinos, Nograles said he would only spend a little since his tickets would be offset by his frequent flier miles.

He said he would also save on hotel bills because he would be hosted by fellow Davaoenos in Las Vegas.

Nograles denied that at least 50 congressmen would go with him to the United States, the same number who went to see Pacquiao’s fight with Ricky Hatton.

“Who said that there will be 50 congressmen who will go to Las Vagas? There is no official travel, nobody has been authorized to go there on the House’s account,” he said.

“We can’t stop them because that’s their money, what is important is that the House would not spend for their fares,” said Majority Leader Arthur Defensor.

A good omen

Lawmakers have also been criticized for supposedly placing huge bets on the fight. Nograles said he would place a wager on Pacquiao but it was only to cover his airline economy ticket, which he estimated at $750.

Pacquiao fights have become a sort of a pilgrimage for some lawmakers, along with the public criticisms.

“I have watched at least eight fights of Pacquiao and every time he fights, this issue comes out. But he always wins his fight, so this might be a good omen,” Nograles said.

For Pacquiao, who has been training at a gym in Hollywood, the road trip to Las Vegas begins Monday.

“I’m 100-percent ready,” Pacquiao said on Sunday, when he did a little road work despite his corner’s orders to take the day off.

Pacquiao, who aims to snatch Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown when they square off at the MGM Grand, also went to church and rehearsed a few songs for a post-match party.

Weight problems?

Pacquiao will spar four or five more rounds in Las Vegas before tapering off in his training.

His schedule: A formal welcome by MGM Grand on Tuesday, the fight’s final press conference on Wednesday and the weigh-in on Friday.

Pacquiao is expected to leave Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, arriving in Las Vegas in the evening.

Cotto, who trained in Tampa, Florida, is already in Las Vegas. On Sunday, he shrugged off insinuations that he had been struggling to make the weight.

“The last fight I spent more than 24 hours doing nothing,” he told the Examiner.com. “Just waiting for the weigh-in. My weight was 145. All I have to do is add a half hour to my work every day and I am going to reach 145 with no problem.”

Pacquiao earlier said he suspected Cotto was struggling to keep his weight down. There were also speculations the Puerto Rican would purposely miss the catch weight and go over by two pounds to gain an advantage on fight night.

Cotto dismissed that notion.

PACQUIAO vs COTTO

Manny Pacquiao will meet Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her joke that day was the two-question bit and it was supposed to simply run as, “Ano sa English ang isda?” And it would be followed by, “Ano naman sa English ang maraming isda?” The answer to the first one is of course “fish,” and for the second one, which is also the punchline, is “fish pond!” But something happened along the way. On the first question, the contestant gave her not the expected answer of “fish” — kumbaga, nasira ang punchline ni Daiana; s’ya at kami ang na-punchline. The contestant’s answer to the first question drowned everybody to the floor. The contestant’s reply was, “FISHDA!” Very funny.

* * *

HOST: Anong “S” na pangalan ng isang pusa ang first name din ng isang Hollywood actor na Stallone ang apelyido at gumanap bilang Rocky at Rambo?

CONTESTANT: SNOOPY!

Those of little faith

SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin Henson

In recalling the pre-fight sentiments of fans fearing a Manny Pacquiao loss to Oscar de la Hoya, I am reminded of two Biblical passages from St. Matthew.

Here’s the message from Matthew 8:26: “And He said to them, Why are you full of fear, O you of little faith? Then He got up and gave orders to the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.”

The other message is from Matthew 17:20: “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”

Those who figured Pacquiao had no chance to beat De la Hoya can’t really be blamed. The disparity in size was startling and in boxing, the good, big man will always beat the good, small man.

Glyn Leach, writing in London’s Boxing Monthly magazine, led the charge in ridiculing the so-called Dream Match. “The thought of De la Hoya-Pacquiao turns my stomach,” he said. “Yes, I know in boxing’s dark and distant past, the great fighters from lower weight divisions would step up to face the bigger men but times have moved on since then, we are more safety conscious and have less injuries and fatalities as a result, thankfully, because that has enabled the sport to survive.”

British promoter Frank Warren said the fight “could be potentially dangerous for Pacquiao – Oscar’s seen better days but I still think he’ll be too big for Pacquiao.”

WBC president Jose Sulaiman called it a “circus act” between a “pachyderm” and a “hobbit horse,” mocking the duel as the mismatch of the century. Of course, he later changed his tune when Pacquiao decided to pay the WBC a sanction fee of $50,000 – after much haggling – for a non-title fight as a form of royalty since the Filipino icon wears the governing body’s lightweight championship belt.

Sulaiman’s early tirade was a knee-jerk reaction to Pacquiao’s decision to move up two weight classes without defending the WBC lightweight crown, which he won from David Diaz only last June. Now, you know what drives Sulaiman to say the things he says – the Mexican is motivated only by dollar signs.

When Pacquiao said he’d pay up, Sulaiman suddenly saw the light and in fact, revelled in the Las Vegas festivities last weekend. He showed up, in his customary wheelchair, to wish Pacquiao and De la Hoya good luck at the weigh-in on the eve of the big fight.

Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin (Jeng) Gacal said he personally wheeled Sulaiman towards the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter and attested to the WBC president’s acquiescence, if not homage.

* * *

To be sure, there were many Filipinos who bet for De la Hoya. They of little faith felt Pacquiao just wouldn’t be able to cope with De la Hoya’s size, experience and power.

Pacquiao’s former business manager Rod Nazario, for one, was afraid of what might happen. No, he didn’t bet against Pacquiao but prayed countless novenas for his safety. International boxing referee Bruce McTavish, who calls it as he sees it, predicted De la Hoya would knock out Pacquiao in three rounds and pleaded to the heavens to be proved wrong.

But there were definitely many more Filipinos who had faith.

One was lawyer Romy Macalintal.

“I would say that the result of the Cassius Clay-Sonny Liston match in the ’60s was repeated in the Pacquiao-De la Hoya fight,” said Macalintal who flew to Las Vegas with his Muhammad Ali scrapbook to show De la Hoya adviser Angelo Dundee.

“Alleged boxing experts in the ’60s and even the California State Boxing Commission then considered the fight as a ‘mismatch’ fearing that Clay would be totally damaged by Liston, the latter being a 7-1 favorite.

“But as it turned out, Clay (now Ali), like Pacquiao, proved these experts wrong. Clay stopped Liston in the seventh round. Pacquiao TKOd De la Hoya in the eighth. Clay and Pacquiao used the speed and power beyond compare to stop their respective rivals.

“By the way, I predicted Pacquiao to win in the eighth round, that I made a loyalty bet of $5 and the odds were 22-1. So I won $110 for my $5 bet.”

Macalintal, who planed back home the other day from Los Angeles, never lost faith in Pacquiao.

* * *

Now, some Filipino sceptics, famous for their crab mentality, are doubting the authenticity of Pacquiao’s win, claiming De la Hoya was “fixed” to lose. Of course, that’s absolute hogwash. If De la Hoya took a dive, he would’ve done it before absorbing the beating he got to save his pretty face from a disfiguring. Besides, De la Hoya is too proud a warrior to even consider a fix. He was pummelled to a pulp by Pacquiao but never went down – that was his macho pride on display.

Why can’t people just accept the fact that last Saturday, Pacquiao was clearly the superior fighter and won the Dream Match fair and square. He outfought, outsmarted and outmaneuvered the Golden Boy who was reduced to a bumbling, aging and fumbling fighter.

There was no fix. De la Hoya’s goal was to earn big bucks at Pacquiao’s expense and he believed he couldn’t lose to a smaller man. He had no respect for Pacquiao. De la Hoya thought that by bringing down his weight to 147, he could match Pacquiao’s speed. He thought wrong.

De la Hoya was drained of energy when he climbed onto the ring. Emerging from his dressing room to march into the arena, he looked nervous, tight and tense. In contrast, Pacquiao was all smiles, loose and confident.

De la Hoya got the beating of his life from Pacquiao whose faith in God and self-confidence never wavered.

But wait, Boxing Monthly’s Leach – the man of littlest faith – recently said something about Pacquiao’s possible next match against Ricky Hatton.

“In my opinion, Hatton vs Pacquiao is straight out of the Laila Ali-Christy Martin guide to slightly sick matchmaking,” said Leach. “Hatton vs Pacquiao would be a contest between two of boxing’s biggest names and one that both men will earn well from. But Pacman, who won his first world title at flyweight, just isn’t big enough and career lightwelter Hatton will crush him as easily as supermiddle Laila smashed bloated lightwelter Martin in one of the ugliest mismatches ever.”

So what else is new? Pacquiao couldn’t care less what Leach and the critics say. He’ll just go out there and prove them wrong all over again. Pacquiao won’t tire silencing the doubters.

Turning Pessimism into an Opportunity

by: Joey Conception Nov. 20, 2008

I have been in the states for the past week, and I have seen the slow down of their pace here.

While property prices, especially in the bay area of San Francisco, have not fallen off the cliff; sales of homes have definitely been on a standstill. This is not because of the lack of buyers who are looking for bargains. This is basically brought about by the absence of credit. Now foreigners cannot borrow from local banks, unlike in the past years. Bank funds have also been limited as their previous practice of monetizing bundled securities and paper assets have obviously stopped by now. Stores that I used to visit, like Circuit City, are closing. Mervyns and so many retail shops are also starting to close. The Apple Stores are one of those that seem to still have a lot of people.

For those who think that America is at the tail-end of its problems, they are wrong. Even with Obama as the new US President and even with greater hope, America has to realize that this will take time. If they will be rescuing every company or industry out there, then the cleansing process for companies to bring down their cost structure will never happen.

With the three big car makers facing huge challenges mainly brought about by car financing offers that vanished, the great debate is whether to save them or not. I personally think that they should not be saved, so these companies can either come out stronger or not exist anymore. But, entrepreneurs will also come out to buy these assets and brands. They will recreate a new business model for American cars.

Unfortunately, America is composed of small and medium enterprises and many of these negosyos will be hit with a tight credit market. Unfortunately, there is no other way for corporate America to come out of this stronger if the companies do not reinvent themselves to the right size and bring down their cost structures. More and more jobs will go to Asia thru outsourcing, because American wage rates are relatively less competitive.

Citibank in America has already announced that 50 thousand jobs will be cut. This is part of building stronger companies in the future. Labor rates will have to come down. This is what happens when over time labor demands become too excessive, rendering companies uncompetitive. Eventually the country becomes uncompetitive.

Even worse, the American dollar has become stronger, since it is the world’s currency of trade. Until now as people unwind their investments, they have no other alternative but to leave them in US dollars, which is even making America less competitive. The Japanese car companies continue to do well in America, beating the American car manufacturers. They have developed hybrid cars and also have a low cost structure.

Moving forward, the possibility of a depression is getting higher. But, maybe it will not be as severe as the 1929 depression, since central banks and governments of the world are playing a very proactive role.

For the Philippines, I have to say that we still are insulated to some extent, as local consumer spending is still good. As long as people are still employed, whether here or as OFWs, we can expect a softened impact of the global turbulence on our economy. Admittedly, the influx of BPOs, no matter what critics say, still provides hundreds of thousands of employment and purchasing power even to college students who want to go part time, and I am sure this has helped in bringing down the jobless rate to 7.4%, from 7.8% last year.

Our real estate is still relatively cheap, compared to what is out there in other Asian countries. Bank lending has always been very strict since the Asian crisis. Many people can avoid borrowing to buy a house and pay in cash. The requirement of a higher down payment has always been there as a discipline in order to avoid being too leveraged.

As long as America is unable to realize the importance of allowing industries to correct themselves, the emerging markets of China, India, and the Philippines will continue to benefit. While I am quite pessimistic about America in the coming months, I am more optimistic about Asia. This may be the time when Asia can come out of this world financial crisis much stronger. This is also not to say that China and the rest of Asia will not feel the economic slowdown, but our country has the right cost structure to compete.

In our country, we should continue to find ways to bring down the cost of doing business. Make laborers realize that what happened to America because of high wages has caused their country to be less competitive. Let us push for the lowering of interest rates to spur growth and lending. At a time like this, more than monetary actions, we should encourage government pump priming of the economy and allow for a bigger budget deficit. We need to spur government spending on basic infrastructures like roads, airports, and seaports that will improve the logistics for negosyos to transport goods. This will also allow more tourists to visit the Philippines. The multiplier effect is greater at this point. There should be sustained assistance to specific and targeted poorest of the poor sectors and more financial support to micro and SMEs. As government spends, it helps in pushing the Philippine Inc. to grow. See what the Chinese have done with their 500 billion dollar stimulus package. We should have our own mini version, but of course properly funded and done well. I have recently landed in the new Iloilo airport and even the new partly opened airport then was already world class standard. We should have more of these kinds of projects in key priority areas.

In the end, our take on these challenging times is to always keep up the high entrepreneurial spirit, and continuously search for pockets of opportunities that crop up amidst the crisis. Entreps are used to challenges but we must be reminded of the need for non-stop learning and cleansing process. Search for innovations that will excite the market. There will be no let up on cost reduction efforts if we are all to survive and even grow bigger.

***

[For feedback, you can email me at gonegosyo@yahoo.com or sms me at 09175591245. Pacquiao said he’s also willing to face the British superstar even if it means fighting him at the Wembley Stadium in England.

But whoever it is, Pacquiao should be in for another huge payday.

“Whoever is fine. You know me,” said Pacquiao inside his customized bus as he travelled four hours to get back to Los Angeles. He took the front seat with his pregnant wife Jinkee and was joined by relatives and friends.

“Are there any more Mexicans out there? I think Zorro is the only one left,” said the fighter who has beaten some of the great fighters from Mexico - Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Looking back at the fight against De la Hoya, Pacquiao said his speed, and good head and body movement enabled him to take away De la Hoya’s jab, and that made it easier for him in dominating his taller opponent.

“He couldn’t move anymore because I was so fast. And each time he threw his jab, I countered. That’s what we trained for - how to counter. I was a moving target and it was very difficult for him to catch me,” he added.

Pacquiao said he was only worried about his head because he knew De la Hoya’s jab and left hook are one of the best in the sport, and that he was never worried getting hit in the body.

“Imagine, I did 2,500 sit-ups a day so I didn’t have to worry about my body. De la Hoya worried about both his head and body. That’s why he looked so scared each time I hit him. I heard him moan after I hit him once in the body,” he remembered.

“Para siyang kandilang unti-unting nau-upos,” Pacquiao said.

The Filipino champion thought that it would have been over in the ninth round if De la Hoya got up his stool to answer the bell because he knew he had him, and that’s what his trainer Freddie Roach told him.

“Manny, this is it. Finish him off. Knock him out. You’ve got him,” he was told during the break.

And so he said he was surprised when he saw De la Hoya walking toward him, thinking he was charging at him until he saw his cornermen signaling the end of the fight.

Pacquiao said he felt that at 148 1⁄2, his weight when he climbed the ring against De la Hoya, he was even faster when he fought David Diaz for the WBC lightweight (135 lbs) crown only last June.

“Imagine, I’ve jumped and fought in three weight divisions this year,” he said, reminding everyone that last March he also defeated Marquez for the WBC super-featherweight (130 lbs) title.

Pacquiao said that after the fight, he received a phone call from Diaz, and he was surprised with what he said.

“Oh, man. You’re unbelievable. What kind of human (being) are you. You were so fast,” Pacquiao remembered Diaz as telling him.

Great Opportunities at Scary Times

Thursday, December 4, 2008 The Philippine Star Business
Great Opportunities at Scary Times
by Joey Concepcion
The world continues to face a financial crisis equal to an intensity-10 earthquake that has never been experienced before. While this disaster does not directly bring danger to human lives, it has directly damaged wealth. Over the past months, I have come across friends and family who have lost so much of their personal and family wealth during this financial crisis. I would say that close to 100 percent of those I know have lost so much. The range just depends. Maybe the luckiest person I know would have lost only 15 percent, but a number have lost up to 50 to 70 percent of their investments. If I were to name them one by one, my column space would run out. Many of them had placed a lot of their trust with their bankers to guide them on their investments. The problem is that many of these bankers use sophisticated instruments and derivative structures like accumulator, equity link notes, etc. The worse thing is that many were encouraged to leverage their portfolios to increase the returns of investments. When people borrow and leverage, their portfolio and assets drop in price. It is a certainty that they will be on margin call. This means that they have to add cash, or else the banks will start selling their assets to meet margin calls. To some extent, Filipinos are more of bond investors than stocks, unlike investors in Hong Kong, China and India who have a higher weight on stocks. But still, a lot of Filipino investors have invested in emerging market bonds that have dropped to levels that were never seen before. Even investment grade bonds have also dropped tremendously. I would consider the Philippine bonds as an exception, since we have fared very well as compared to other Asian bonds. The only ones spared in this crisis are those who have stayed in cash, or those who have invested only in the Philippine corporate and government bonds. The Philippine stock market has gone down to current levels of 1,900, from its high of about 4,000 index. Ayala Corporation, BPI and PLDT are coming close to the lows of the 90s. Even our own RFM Corporation is trading at 0.23 cents. That results to a market capital of 900 million pesos. The funny part is that our 50 percent share in Selecta with Unilever alone is worth more than P1.5 billion today, excluding the many other parts of RFM. You can see the amount of paper wealth destroyed in the past six months. It is sad to say that if this continues next year, we should see property values coming off. Many have been hurt in their investments. If margin calls will be made, people will be forced to sell their prime real estate. Who do we blame for all these? The banks that we trusted have a great role in this mess, aside from the many complicating structures they have created for their clients. Banks have paid a price for these mistakes. Many of the banks, if not all the banks in the world, are trading at half of their values and some even at 20 percent of their high. If not for the support of the Feds last week, Citibank would have been in serious trouble. Hopefully, banks and investors will learn from this. A good friend of mine who did very well buying Benpres sees the Dow Jones at 4t next year. Another chartist who I have listened to and who follows the Elliot Wave (a way of reading the charts) feels the same way too. There is a lot of fear that the worst will happen in '09, which happens to be the Year of the Ox. We are indeed in scary times, but I still believe that the Philippines should still come out as one of the Asian stars that will perform in '09. My appeal is for those who want to change our constitution before 2010, we suggest people to start first the debate in 2009 on what is the best form of government. Maybe let us also get a provision to state that in 2010, those elected in the senate and congress will form into a constitutional assembly. But, let the people decide if they want Con-ass or a Constitutional Convention. Whichever is voted, full implementation on political changes should only happen in 2016. The needed changes on economic provisions of the constitution can be made effective immediately. There is nothing wrong in reviewing the constitution, but timing and perceptions must be considered. Any form of amendment before 2010 become negative to a lot of Filipinos, since they look at it with suspicion in extending the president's term. As I explained to friends from the opposition, PGMA will not extend her term. She wants to see our democracy continue, especially in times like this. But yes, it's time to start the debates on whether Mar Roxas' Concon or Conass should be the way to review and change the constitution and what provisions must be revised to adjust to the current environment. Last Friday, I was invited to attend the launching of Sen. Manny Villar's "Pondo sa Sipag, Puhunan sa Tiyaga." It is basically a program that will search for microentrepreneurs nationwide who have been doing well, amidst the challenges they face. Under the program, the awardees will be given P100,000 financial assistance that could give them a better chance to move up from micro to small. As I was listening to Sen. Manny Villar's message, I noticed that it was exactly the same message I tell people during our caravans. He talked about the need for a change in attitude, which is what Go Negosyo wants to see. Manny's line "Sipag at Tiyaga" is very similar to what Go Negosyo promotes in Filipinos. These are the values of many Filipino-Chinese entrepreneurs. As Go Negosyo was born, it came along with the line "sagot sa kahirapan." The need for a new revolution, an entrepreneurship revolution, is what this country needs. While I work as a consultan t on entrepreneurship for PGMA, I believe that we need to see more men and women realize that the solution to poverty is the creation of more negosyos. It is important that every presidential candidate has a clear vision on how they intend to solve poverty, and on how they would encourage and support microentrepreneurs to move up the ladder. Governor Vilma Santos-Recto also has a good handle on how to create a negosyo climate. Governor Lray Villafuerte, as well, is a very enterprising leader. We saw that same intensity in the Negosyo programs of Jon-jon Mendoza of Bulacan. My thrust is to get local governments to take the lead in developing a negosyo climate in their respective provinces. The local officials shall be the Negosyo champions in their areas, and rightly so, because they can make a difference in improving the lives of their constituents. We aim to replicate the Go Negosyo model for mindset change and entrepreneurship empowerment to all provinces and localities in the country, as the way to propagate on a sustainable basis the huge advocacy to change the Filipino culture and mindset. The goal is to get all government agencies and private associations in their areas to support the enterprising leaders and the people in each province. While India and Thailand have huge problems, this presents us with more opportunities to build the grassroots for a more meaningful growth and development. More call centers and BPOs would locate in the Philippines, and not just in Metro Manila. In fact it is already happening in other cities outside Manila. With everything else that is happening, especially in the promotion and development of hundreds of tourist destinations, more tourists are expected to come to the Philippines. This presents a lot of negosyo opportunities. The next President of this country must take the entrepreneurial success of the Arroyo administration to another level. This is our chance, and Yes, The Filipino Can!
*** For feedback, email me at gonegosyo@yahoo.com or thru SMS at 09175591245.
